Recommendations from Surveyors for Nigerian Citizens to Prevent Land Scams

The surveying profession is the primary resource for land-related issues, making integrity a vital aspect of the profession.

According to the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), it is important for Nigerians to exclusively utilize the services of registered members in order to prevent the increasing occurrence of land fraud in the country.

During the 2024 Global Surveyors’ Day, which was held in Ibadan, Waheed Lamidi, the Chairman of Oyo State, urged participants to raise awareness by organizing a sensitization walk.

According to Lamidi, one can easily recognize a registered professional surveyor by their specific registration number and NIS address. He emphasized the need to address the increasing issue of land grabbing in the country in a strategic manner in order to effectively reduce the problem as soon as possible.

Despite the enactment of laws, regulations, and penalties to address land grabbing, the implementation has been ineffective, which is a cause for lamentation.

According to Amos Okunlola, the Coordinating Director of the Office of the Surveyor-General in the state, the surveying profession is the primary resource for land-related issues, making integrity a vital aspect of the profession.

The Office of Surveyor-General, represented by Olusoji Adetoye, Director of Mapping and Boundaries, has expressed interest in collaborating with practicing surveyors to ensure effective and long-lasting land administration in the state.
